My Creative Space - to fray or not to fray?

I have been trying to perfect a big rose design for a while... these two blooms were made a little while back. So, no I am not superwoman making things while juggling no sleep and a newborn!! I just got these photos back and had to share them!! These are both hair clips that double as headbands once on ribbon :-)

I love dupion silk but it does fray a fair bit and the edges don't seal so well... I don't mind frayed - I like it more in the first photo than the second.... I guess it's an individual thing!? Sometimes I worry it can cheapen the look of my hair accessories but there is also something rustic about that unfinished, natural look? Any thoughts?? These gorgeous models belong to 'my' gorgeous Sydney-based children's photographer, Amanda :-) oh and more creative spaces here.

PS: Just a note to set the record straight for my last creative space post: I didn't make honey jumbles 2 days home from hospital!!! They were done a few days before I had Josiah :-) So, I am not crazy nor that clever!

I agree, the rustic look is lovely on your flowers, the fray is a nice touch...

I myself really like a frayed edge it adds a softness to the finish and shows a different aspect of the fabrics charm.

You will soon see in my linen fabric poppy brooches and they all have a varying amount of frayed edges.

BTW. I think you're a superwoman just keeping up with your blog whilst juggling sleep (or lack there of) and a newborn.

I completely agree, i see way too many unprofessional cheap messy work that uses the fray option & it just doesn't look finished. You can always do a combination of both, your customers will let you know what they want!! These are both beautiful options, lovely lovely. Have you tried iron on interfacing or fusible webbing to keep the edges holding together is you can't seal the edges?? Good luck!! Love Posie

They are so lovely! And the frayed edges make them even more so. Hope that little man isn't growing too fast for you. Enjoy your weekend :)

Embrace the fray!! I love that look. But I can see why you'd sometimes want the clean-edged look as well.

Hi Rosalind. The headbands/hair clips are divine! I think if I were making them I'd probably do both as it's one of those things that tends to divide customers (I have it with the tails/no tails option on my tape measure brooches.) Hope you are managing to get some rest with your new bundle!
