This march will be my one year Anniversary since I've been back at Handmade Canberra Markets! I've already been in the office for 12 months now working behind the scenes with a great bunch of clever ladies, getting to do all sorts of fun stuff on the business and creatively.
I actually attended one of the first Handmade markets as a punter 10 years ago at Albert Hall and met Julie through a stallholder. Since then, I have worked on and off for Handmade in between having babies and living in London for three years :-)
The market has grown so much since I was away and the quality of stallholders continue to rise! Did you know it takes us an entire day to bump the market in - it's a huge job now co-ordinating over 270 stallholders! We all know Epic isn't the prettiest location but in Canberra we don't have a lot of choice for indoor venues that are big enough to house us! So we put that aside and concentrate on bringing fabulous product and produce to Canberra that is ALL made in Australia, how great is that - something I'm proud to be a part of. The whole album from the Christmas market 2018 can be found on the website! Dates for 2019 below also.
I had the pleasure of making these paper flowers for the Handmade Canberra's - special Mothers Day market. They took about 17 hours and lots of patience, cutting, painting, folding, shaping, gluing, experimenting... my fingers were quite sore by the end. We hired an ivy wall from local company Show Pony and most flowers were on wire stems so I could just thread them through the lattice. I love making - it is my happy place.

The larger poppy type flowers are made based from The House That Lars Built tutorial. The rest are my own designs made with a mix of cardboard and paper.Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5801845065911280841.post-12183263985803942152016-09-21T09:00:00.000+10:002017-01-02T06:50:15.622+11:00Giant Paper Flower Update

My giant paper flower is one of my most looked up items on my blog with whopping 123,647 views over the last four years. Do people still love paper flowers this much or have they had their time? I just found my notebook all this time later with some of the dimensions and card stock weights. I've never done a tutorial but there are so many around to follow, I don't think it's necessary to add one more :-)

I used 3 x sheets of Canson 300gsm card stock for the outer petals and leaves. The dimension of the card was 500 x 650mm (19 x 23").

I used 7 sheets of Vivaldi 120gsm white paper. You can also use Canson cartridge paper 500 x 600mm sheets.

My outer leaves and petals were constructed in a similar way to "The House that Lars Built, Giant Paper Flowers" and my petals were all cut free-hand in varying sizes. The centre of my rose was constructed similar to this tutorial but I didn't attached anything on a stick, I just folded the bottom of the cone over and stuck it flat so I had a flat base to work with. I built up the petals around the centre, alternating placement as a real rose looks. My hot glue gun was my weapon of choice, I went through quite a few glue sticks! I hope this is helpful. xRosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5801845065911280841.post-75277599832840522392016-09-20T19:21:00.001+10:002016-09-20T19:21:59.998+10:00Geometric Millennium Falcon - Paper Piecing

I was brave enough or silly enough to have a go at paper piecing back in May - it's not for the faint hearted people. Of course I choose a tricky geometric piece but it was a cool free pattern by Quiet Play that I knew Josiah would like. After initially commenting he thought it looked nothing like the Millennium Falcon, he now loves it and it gets organised next to his pillow every night before he goes to sleep.

Quiet play has some tutorials on how to piece and I also used this video which I found super helpful including the ruler she uses. I bought one on Amazon, I can't imagine how you would paper piece without it. Purl Soho has some fabulous free patterns, they are a go-to for modern, simple and classy patterns and they have impeccable fabric taste. This is my first Everyday Tote, there will be more... It is a great size and I love all the seams enclosed in bias binding - so neat. My bias was a garage sale find and quite stiff - I wished I had changed my needle as the stitching got pretty rough which shows on the chambray.

We use the tote mostly for a library bag and my school pick up bag complete with snacks and plenty of room to fit book bags, notes and craft etc! The only criticism is the pocket is too high and probably not deep enough for my liking - it also flaps about. Next time I'll sew a pocket on the bottom half of the bag. While I love the bias inside, I'll probably just insert a lining next time for a quicker sew! I also used a Noodlehead trick for the handles as I had no webbing on hand. Instead of folding in half again as Anna would I added the bias for contrast and strength and I ran out of fabric and didn't want thin handles.
World Book Day was a Viking inspired affair... due to a friend having a Horrible History party a little while back and I knew our costumes were going to double up for WBD. My favourite thing to sew was Josiah's tunic and Anya's shrug! Josiah had a linen longer tunic to go under the pleather top pictured below, but his classroom is hot and it restricted his running around.

I made a tube for the bodice out of the pleather reversed, then cut rows of scallops and sewed them on for the 'skirt' and a small rectangle to go over the shoulders too. Josiah's costume was inspired by the outfits on Horrible Histories classic, We Sell Any Monk!

My 'Astrid' is never short for a pose! I followed this tutorial for her shrug, just free-styled the skirt out of Josiah's leftover fabric. The sleeve's were also leftovers from Josiah's under tunic, as the first set were too tight for him but worked perfectly for her forearms. We bought tiny skull buttons and faux suede cord from Amazon.

Anya also had a stone age dress up the following week! Fabric is sourced from Simply Fabrics in Brixton, London - it is excellent for dress up fabric at great prices. Anya's costume cost me six pound, we had everything else at home. We cut the toes out of an old pair of hubby's socks and sewed the fur trim around the top, the leopard print covering the boot was badly hacked and sewn under the fur - I'd run out of steam by then! ha ha Last year's Book Week Costumes.Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5801845065911280841.post-55037387314550294262015-10-17T05:32:00.001+11:002015-10-17T05:32:34.991+11:00Fashion Accessories and Materials in the early 1900's

I borrowed a fabulous book from the library called, Fashion since 1900: The complete source book by John Peacock. It gave me a greater insight into the fashion, particularly looking at wedding and evening dresses, accessories and fabrics around from the 1900's.

1910 - 1914 Garments and accessories in this era favoured silk (chiffon, satin, crepe, taffeta, organdie), peacock and ostrich feathers, pin-tucks, machine made lace, dolman sleeves, cotton, bows, linen, velvet, wool, self-covered buttons, crystal beads and wax flowers (above image), silk gauze veils, broderie anglaise trim, jet beads.

1915 - 1929 Materials used were similar to the above with the introduction of drop waists, lace caps, beaded head-dresses, waist corsages, narrow beaded straps, godets, felt cloche, beaded chiffon with piped velvet, handkerchief hemline, plastic beads, tubular dresses, glass beads, drop earrings, machine embroidered silk.
1930 - 1940 The skirt suit with knife pleats, becomes popular, leg of mutton sleeves, glass beads, pannelled skirts, short hair set into rows of waves, silk chiffon veils, pearl and silk flower head-dress, beaded and embroidered skull caps, coloured glass brooches, dresses cut on bias.

1955 - 1959 Brides were wearing brocade bugle beads, organdie, patterned silk-chiffon, silk tuelle, lace, scallops, knee length frocks, bows, small beaded headresses, silk grossgrain, strapless gowns with stiffened petticoats, lace, velvet bows and seer sucker.

I lost interest after the 50's especially after the introduction of polyester and lame. The Fashion Museum at Bath is on my to-do hit list while I'm here in England as I believe it has a bigger collection of historical fashion. I was fortunate enough to visit the Wedding Dresses 1775 - 2014 exhibition at the V&A when we first arrived in London last year. I really appreciate the history, the handiwork and accessibility to enjoy such beautiful exhibitions, it really has been a highlight of life in London for me.Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5801845065911280841.post-88413804412621210262015-10-01T21:58:00.003+10:002015-10-04T06:25:19.902+11:00Discover: The True Cost of Fast Fashion

Two months ago I watched the brilliant documentary, The True Cost. The movie highlighted the complexities of the Fast Fashion industry with a massive impact on our environment and the livelihoods of those who make our clothes. It was moving, confronting and I'm pretty sure you will find it hard to watch without making any changes to your buying habits.

Through the movie I discovered the inspiring brand, People Tree who are based here in London. Not only do People Tree produce ethically made garments they also support rural communities by using organic cotton to produce their clothing, everything is produced with consideration for the planet and people.

In the past the most ethical shopping I managed to do was buying costume jewellery that supported a good cause. As a family we love a good thrift shop (hubby finds the best things - I do not!), I sew and fully believe in the handmade revolution :-) But now I've been challenged to go one step further.

I recently made my first intentional purchase of ethical clothing when I stumbled across this fabulous shop in Brixton, The Keep. I was out on one of my exploring-London jaunts and was so thrilled to find a pair of jeans that I was in need of, they were ethically made, looked good and were comparably priced to brand name jeans! Putting the cost of actual pounds aside, I am so happy every time I put them on knowing the cost of making my jeans did not negatively impact our environment nor another person's life... that my friend's is priceless.

There was a great article in the Huffington Post UK recently about The Keep's owner Kate Richards and why she founded her sustainable boutique. Lastly, my friend Laura started a lovely blog, Better Dressed which has lots of practical ideas on how to change your wardrobe, where to find better brands and lots of interesting information on the garment industry etc... I know all the information can feel overwhelming at times but I strongly believe that if we all made at least one change in how we 'consume', the world would be a different place. A rainbow palette is the hot tip for Spring / Summer 2016 according to Vogue, with plenty of neutrals and muted tones among the brighter yellows, oranges and reds. Here are some of my favourites from New York Fashion Week, dominated by my new discovery of designer Lela Rose.
We've just past the one year mark of our new life in London which still feels surreal. We've had lots of lovely times and feel quite settled but I have to say those first 3-6 months were a killer. I did so much reading, as much research as I possibly could about moving your family overseas but I think somethings you just have to live it and find out for yourself. Everyone's experience will be different... a bit like childbirth!

We live in the basement flat of this lovely old home, it's teeny-tiny - London style! The kids school is at the bottom of our road and it is lovely to walk there and back every day instead of the half hr bumper-to-bumper commute we had in Canberra.

The history of Crystal Palace is pretty special and we think it's a really cool place to live. Crystal Palace park is fabulous and there are plenty of trees and open spaces which help this Aussie girl feel not so cramped. I do miss gum trees, blue skies and the landscape of home, especially Canberra. We arrived here going into winter on the back of a Canberra winter (depressing) so I was positively giddy when it finally started warming up this Summer. I have to say, with the exception of a few warm days it didn't really feel like Summer - sad face.
This is the rec at the bottom of our street with the school in the background. The kids have settled in really well - I am super proud of them. Josiah started full-time school in November, he was only 4.5yrs and had a wobbly first week (too soon for this mama) but recovered nicely. Anya finally started in February - she was off school for four months solid, it nearly broke me.... that is a whole other post for another time.

The last photo I'll leave you with is one of the 'selling points' for our rental here.... yard and 'summer house'! We have thoroughly enjoyed the extra space over Spring / Summer, lots of picnics, dinner on the deck and digging in the back corner for Josiah. It currently houses some unpacked boxes (due to lack of space inside ;) a dryer and a kids crafting area. Thank goodness we were used to living simply but this place has really challenged our understanding of small spaces. Another top shelf sewing blog is Ada Spragg. Sophie should receive commissions from the many sewing patterns she has undoubtedly encouraged people to purchase simply through her fabulous interpretations, styling and fabric choices. I don't know how many times I have seen something Sophie has made and thought, oh love that... looked up the pattern and thought, wow - I would never have given that a second thought.
Trene from Groovy Baby and Mama inspires me to choose great fabric! After reading some of Felcia's posts on the Craft Sessions, I realised I buy too much fabric that I love for it's colour or patterns but realistically I would never wear them, arghhh. I usually hate black and grey on kids but they never look out of place on Trene's stylish children, must be the Danish factor :-)

Watch this space for the start of my stash busting and thoughtful, intentional fabric purchases, oh once I get my sewing mojo back :-)
The best way to de-stash before an international move is have a family member have a special birthday and be determined to make a special handmade present while you are packing! I'm not sure if it was good therapy or plain stupidity. It's the most fun I've had making a quilt though - I call it my de-stash, free-style, mash-up of goodness. Sorry if your eyeballs are hurting, my niece LOVES colour...

My intention was to use this pattern for the whole quilt which is stunning but I didn't have the patience for it in my time frame. You can see a block of chevron in the first photo which coincidentally looks like a tree :-)
The back and binding were made from scraps. I had lectured myself on not buying any new fabric for this project but sadly had some big patches to fill in, so I caved. It was the last project I completed with my beautiful sewing gals - I miss Tuesday nights at my place.
This week I visited the Alexander McQueen Exhibition, Savage Beauty at the V&A Museum. It was a visceral experience which left me in a weird but happy place. I would highly recommend booking tickets soon as the earliest available tickets are around mid-May. If you live local and frequent the V&A like I do, you could become a museum member and go back as often as you like without waiting for a time slot.
The exhibition evolved in complexity as you progressed through the rooms. I experienced almost every emotion on the spectrum in a short period of time, from calm to overwhelming. I thoroughly enjoyed the pieces themselves, the workmanship, materials, textures, manipulation and pairing of textiles and even the bizarre. It was a spectacular showcase of some amazing works of art, I can't wait to go back.
I just discovered Alabama Chanin and I'm just so excited about their cool techniques and point of difference in the fashion industry!!! A company whose ethos is inspired by the principles of the slow food movement and are fully invested in environmentally responsible products and materials, ahhh so very cool.
Not just that, their craftsmanship is top quality and everything is truly beautiful to look at, a work of art. While I prefer the simpler, un-embellished pieces I so appreciate the details - the embroidery, embellishment and hard work that has gone into their h-a-n-d-s-e-w-n garments.....woah. They do machine make clothes too and primarily use locally sourced organic cotton.
I was so excited I purchased founder, Natalie Chanin's, Hand-Embellishing Knit fabrics course on Craftsy. I'm not planning on sewing along and making the jacket included but Natalie is such a gifted teacher, I've enjoyed what I have learnt so far. I was lucky to get the course on sale too... I love learning :-) Of course there are books, courses, sewing supplies and Natalie's journal has some really interesting, thought provoking articles under the Beautiful life and Inspiration category. I'll leave you to get lost in the world of A.Chanin yourself....
Nani Iro - Shine Many Ways was my choice of fabric for my first woven Hemlock Tee by Grainline Studios. It's my second Hemlock and while I'm not convinced it's the best pattern for my body shape I like a comfy shirt and Jen's patterns. The Ivory fabric is a lot more 'latte' than Ivory, I feel like I need some contrasting Navy around my neck or a tiny pocket :-)

I would also recommend using a fine or new needle as I didn't bother changing mine from my last few projects and wished I had after some unpicking the cotton sateen it left me with visible holes. They have already started fading after a little smoothing out with my fingers and then ironing. The fabric crinkles a bit but it's sooo nice to touch and wear.
Amber from Fancy Tiger Crafts cut her sleeves on the bias and I might do that if there is a next time. I have enough arm movement but wished there was slightly more ease. I may alter the sleeve length to above the elbow if I have any shrinkage - even though the fabric is pre-washed.
Overall I'm happy with my new 'Spring' top - it's a nice quick sew. It was freezing outside on Saturday when we took these photos... Come on Spring weather, this Aussie is SICK of the cold. I remember the under arm seam on my last Hemlock tripped me up - I tried to sew it at too much of an angle - I think the picture on Jen's tutorial wasn't real clear. Ironing the seams the way she instructs is important and so is clipping under the arm seam too for woven fabric. Some lazy person hasn't unpacked her over-locker yet!!
We got to experience our first book week since living here in London! Something I had always looked forward to doing since having school age kids but our Canberra school didn't ever participate, now I feel somewhat relieved. However, I did enjoy making the Red Riding Hood cape from the book, Oliver and S - Little Things to Sew. The outside fabric is just cheap lining which cost me five pound, the button one pound and the lining is an old sheet. I bought Anya's 'Merida' dress on e-bay second hand and despite Anya's hair colour being perfect for Merida, we decided Maid Marion was a true book character.
Anya is seven years old, so I made the large size as suggested and lengthened it by eight inches. I found the armholes were in a little bit of a weird place regardless of the length. Having said that the pattern comes together beautifully and I found it a satisfying and easy sew (read_no fussing over size adjustments_).
No Maid Marion is complete without her side-kick Robin Hood!!! I surprised the kids with a bow and arrow just before taking the photos - they were chuffed! When I decided to make Anya's cape I completely tossed out the idea of making two costumes, I'm not stupid. I went against my no polyester policy and bought Josiah's outfit online too - our dress up box is slowly being replenished.Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5801845065911280841.post-17425768948053775032014-07-18T16:11:00.001+10:002014-07-18T16:11:18.926+10:00Etsy Store Closing Mon 21st July 2014

I will be closing my etsy store until further notice as we are moving to London and I need to pack up my lovely laces and fabrics etc... I am guessing it will take a while to find a home, settle kids into school and get re-established. If you have anyone you know that might benefit from my big sale, please pass this on... they only have a few days left!!
The costumes in Tolstoy's, Anna Karenina were truly stunning, created by award winning designer, Jacqueline Durran. The theatrics of the movie was fabulous, the story line not so much - so I focused on the beautiful pieces of art worn throughout.
Apparently the millinery was done by elusive milliner, Sean Barrett.
When I did my millinery workshop with Julie Fleming in Melbourne, I got to see some gorgeous vintage veiling up close and it is so much softer and finer than the veiling available these days. There was a heavy use of veiling throughout the movie and I was drooling over nearly every piece.
A few weeks ago I treated myself to a workshop at Canberra Creative's fabulous Makers Hub. It was my reward for getting through a few weeks of solo parenting after having my hubby overseas! I took a watercolour workshop which was a nice, relaxing way to spend two hours.
We learnt lots of different techniques then attempted to use them by painting something in the room. You'll never guess what I painted... yes, flowers!!!
I enjoy learning new things and would recommend you check out all the wonderful courses Mikaela has on offer, there is something for everyone. In fact, Mikaela is running a few workshops at the Handmade Market next weekend, so go along and check both of them out - it will be worth your while.Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5801845065911280841.post-73711918939485193792014-04-28T07:00:00.000+10:002014-04-28T19:49:35.557+10:00Anzac Day at the Arboretum

On Anzac day we went to the Arboretum to explore new places and visit favourite spots - the obligatory pod park of course. The first stop was to the Eagle's nest which we hadn't seen before. A cool sculpture by Richard Moffat made from recycled metal.
Canberra is so pretty in Autumn! The white house (Government House) you can see just off center is where Kate & Wills stayed while they were in town, not forgetting baby George!

My favourite park of the day was our last stop at the woods for a teddy bear's picnic, complete with 'honey' (torn orange paper) for the bears. I loved getting out my real camera and capturing us having a mini adventure - I'd forgotten how much I love to take photos (not on my phone).
After afternoon tea we foraged for sticks to build a 'fire', climbed trees and explored - the kids absolutely loved it and so did this mama. Such a nice change to do something a little different - I feel so refreshed after being surrounded by nature.
These blossoms are made from tissue paper and a few other materials as seen below, it's amazing how a few modest items can be transformed into a lovely flower!

First step - cut your tissue paper up into petals. I did cut the petals as I went graduating to larger petals for the outside of the flower.

Some I doubled thickness, some tripled, depends how fluffy you want that layer around your center.

Speaking of center's I drew some lines on my gold tissue paper in white crayon and then wrapped it around the polystyrene ball, twisting slightly at the base - it is an old technique used in millinery flowers actually - using fabric of course and sometimes just cotton wool. Add the stamens then wrap with floristry tape. I also poked a wire into the middle of the ball as you can see below, so I had some length to tape the stamens to.

Once the petals were cut I pinched them all in at the bottom ready to tape and start the construction of the flower.

Work your way around the center, layering the petals alternatively, odd numbers work best.
I just kept adding layers until the petals got too heavy to add without wiring first - use this wiring technique.
I made these for the opening of the Makers Hub with a few other smaller flowers I'll post about another time. Leave a link in my comment section if you make some of these flowers following my tutorial! The best compliment of my work is to see it on the lovely bride on her special day. I really love how this piece looks in Melissa's hair and with her dress. I made small elastic loops either side of the suede flowers so they could just be pinned in - it would have been super light and comfortable, not a headband headache in sight.
This is a free motion embroidery piece on suede, embellished with Swarovski crystals, quite organic in its form and creation. Melissa paired it with a gorgeous gown from Leanne Marshall (the Leanne Marshall - winner of Season 5, Project Runway ;) She wanted something not overly fussy to go with the lace top and this looked just perfect!
I paid a small price for this bed side table from the Salvo's. It was the first time painting something with grooves, which were fun to sand!! I used a Porters VOC free Paint again from the Paint Place in Mitchell.
This is the before shot on my Instagram feed! It was dark brown... Eleven months later, I finally found the time to renovate it and knocked it over pretty much in one weekend. I now have Anya's bed and bed-side table waiting for me and my lovely cabinet :-) Lucky for me I received a sander for my birthday! It dawned on me recently when hubby threw this flower out of our tiny backyard shed that I didn't ever share any photos of it!! It was one of the prototypes I made for a show in Australian Fashion Week 2012.
I don't have the dimensions or instructions but here is a photo of hubby holding it to give you some idea of the size. The thin dowel wasn't really strong enough - I would have used thicker dowel for more support, had I of gone ahead with the order.
Pretty if I do say so myself! I really do love my hot glue gun, I used to say when I was little my dream job would be to make stuff all day long :-) Some days I see a little of that dream, what a lucky lady I am. Have a great weekend.
Happy New Year and welcome back! If you have noticed my blogging has dwindled it has most likely been replaced by my use of Pinterest and Instagram. I am Rosalind Grace Designs on both! In the past, my blog was always a place to catalogue things I liked, creative ideas, to show some behind the scenes of my work and a platform to share cool designers/advice I discovered along the way. So, I'm still around, just not as regularly in this space.

One of my creative goals in 2014 was to tackle knitting and crocheting. I thrifted a variety of needles for both and spend spare time practising in between my personal sewing and shop projects! This is a necklace for moi! The needle is tiny, thank goodness for my reading glasses. I found a tutorial on Beadaholique's Youtube channel, they also have lots of tutes on their website. Great images, good light, no banging on with unnecessary info - wonderful!Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02728311414040686800noreply@blogger.com0
