Pattern Review and beginners tutorial - Versatile Wrap Skirt

Well here it is - My versatile wrap skirt! I am pretty happy with how my skirt turned out. It ended up being a quick sew, something you could definitely whip up in an afternoon and a great pattern for beginners (Pascale;). Although I have to admit when I first opened the pattern I was slightly annoyed there was no pattern pieces (you have to draft your own). I looked at the rather long a,b,c explanation of how to draft the pattern and and threw it aside for a while. Once I got over it, I dug out the pattern and had a better look, saw 3 easy diagrams with measurements and I was set.

  • I drew the pattern straight onto the material then cut it. I used the selvedge as the bottom line on each pattern piece, to make sure I had at least one perfectly straight line. I then traced those pieces onto large sheets of tissue paper for future reference.

  • These photos are for beginners!!

This is how the 3 pieces sewn together are meant to look in step one.

I cut my 6 x strips (which become your hem edging and waist edging/tie) in step three, out of my left over Birdie Sling plain material to contrast and even though it's not a perfect match it really makes the skirt I think. I again used the selvedge to guide me for a straight bottom line and then measured them all out and cut.

This is after they are all sewn together in one continuous line and ironed in half.

Attaching strip to the bottom of the skirt in step four.

Step four (b)

How the hem looks once attached. What a great idea to hem a skirt hassle free! You might just notice my seams are different in size, you might want to make the end seam bigger on the edging if you are a perfectionist and want them to align... perfectly :-)

Step five - this is how the top tie/waistband should look when you have sewn it.

The pattern doesn't say too but I clipped my corners for less bulk when I turned my tie inside out.

Step five (f) I recommend using a large safety pin to turn your tie inside out. It is easy enough to undo it and jiggle it out even though it is encased in your tie once turned completely inside out.

Back darts

Side seams on band

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:
  • I originally made a button hole on the waistband to pass the long end of the tie through like the pattern suggested but when I tried it on it didn't sit right and for some reason the button hole ended up too far over.
  • I also found it way too bulky around my waist and because I have a narrow waist and a healthy rounded butt, so I found the best solution was inserting two little darts at the back (over each cheek;)
  • Fortunately the darts took care of my bad button hole alignment. I decided to go without a button hole for now.
  • The last photo is the waistband/tie at the side seams. Because of the shape of the top of the skirt (see 2nd photo) I had to pinch the material in where the side seams met and top stitch it because as I pinned/sewed the band it gathered. Sometimes you can work the material so that it doesn't but I found there was too much allowance in the tie. You'll see the angles in that 2nd photo where the sides meet.
  • I think I would prefer it slightly longer too, mine did not look as long as the picture on the front of the pattern. I am around 5'6 and it sits just below my knees.
  • I like my skirts to sit on my hips and not around my waist so I think I allowed a little more room width wise (choose medium pattern) but I probably didn't need to as I think it is generous in it's sizing and wrapping around your body!
  • I love that when you walk - it doesn't flash your knickers :-)

Happy Sewing and I would love to hear your thoughts if you have also used this pattern.

*Ed's note - 16th Feb 2011 - I took my measurements the other day and realised I probably should have made the small! I think that is why I had so many problems with the waist! silly me. I still love wearing the skirt.

Retail Therapy

I hate early morning starts and 5.30am wasn't my idea of a good start to the morning. My poor little babe wet through to her PJ's which is fine, we dealt with that promptly but normally she goes back to sleep snuggled in with us quite nicely... not this morning. Aghhh.... Anyway, I am trying my best not to be grumpy and would definitely like a shopping fix to brighten my day - however shallow that may be... a girl can dream. It is supposed to be spring here in Canberra but it's been freezing... the weekend was a killer. So these Anthropology pieces might help me feel I am heading into summer and a little retail therapy never hurt anyone.

Happy Birthday to my dear Dad

Oh I love my childhood photos - these are from the 70's in Africa. I just love how Dad is not only reading to us but he is in the cot with my sister and I (top picture) and he has hair :-) I have my father to thank for passing on his creativity among many other things. He is the most reliable, friendly, trustworthy, giving man you will ever meet (other than my husband;). It's a beautiful thing seeing him in action as a Grandfather, because when I see him love my daughter I get to imagine what he was like with me as a very small child. Dad is a sucker for babies, my youngest brother and I call him the baby-hog! Love you Dad, Happy Birthday!

MACRO Monday - Freesias

I bought these Freesias from our farmers market last weekend $6 - still lovely. They are one of my Mum's favourites, I always made sure I grabbed her some at the markets when they were in season - back in my floristry days. They give the room a soft pleasant, perfume.

It was freezing here over the weekend - what the hell happened to Spring? Thankfully we didn't have the crazy dust storms like the photos I saw of Sydney and Brisbane. Ours were rather mild. We grabbed some more goodies at the Lifeline book fair on Sat - proper second hand book prices. All in all it was a good weekend.

Friday Favourites - Sarah Jane

I bought this print for Anya's first birthday last year. I love it and smile every time I walk through her bedroom door and see it. Sarah Jane was one of the first blogs I followed (still do) and the first thing I purchased on Etsy I think!?! I just adore her work and plan on adding another lovely print to Anya's wall sometime soon - don't you love the Aussie dollar's value at the moment!

Versatile Wrap Skirt

I just finished making the Versatile Wrap skirt by Make it Perfect. I did a few things differently and will put a little tutorial up next week when I take some photos of the end product! I ended up using the material I had intended for a gum drop pillow and scraps of plain fabric from my Amy Butler birdie sling :-) Soooooo happy to finally make something for me :-) Now it just needs to get warm!!

Bower Bird

My niece is quite the bower bird!! This is what my sister pulled out of her school bag pockets! I thought it was hilarious and worth sharing :-)

Definition of a bower bird:

In and around the bower the male places a variety of brightly colored objects he has collected. These objects — usually different among each species — may include hundreds of shells, leaves, flowers, feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items, coins, nails, rifle shells, or pieces of glass. The males spend hours arranging this collection.

Experimenting with more rings

It is nice to make something different to hair accessories - I made this cute little ivory ring for adults, featuring a Swarovski pearl! I was never meant to be all about hair accessories but that is the direction I seem to have taken for now. I love making hair stuff but it is also nice to do some different pieces here and there.

New lovely things

I wanted to show off these divine little pieces I scored from both my cousins who do beautiful work (I also had a few for sale on my stand at the markets). The little pin cushion is made by Gret who has an Etsy store and the tissue cover is made by Yana (who may open a little store down the track). Gretel's is linen with vintage embroidery and Yana's is linen with lovely fabric from Ink & Spindle. It fits those little packets of tissues perfectly but one lady who purchased one mentioned she was going to use her for an Ipod or jewellery!

MACRO Monday - Cherry Blossoms

The cherry blossom tree in our backyard only blossoms for about 2-3 weeks then leaves start to grow in their place and soon we have lovely shade for lazy afternoons on the picnic rug! We make the most of the outdoors here in Spring - it is my favourite time of year in Canberra. I hope you had a nice weekend. I have been sewing Anya a top for her 2nd birthday party - we are having a red & white spotty theme :-) I have really enjoyed sewing for her and plan to do more of it.

Friday favourites - Anthropologie

I think Ruby or Kathleen first put me onto Anthropologie last year some time. I do love their store! Apparently they don't ship to Australia yet but are working on it! So many lovely pieces - and such a variety, even their knits and Tees are cool! Happy browsing and have a fab weekend. We are all on the mend. My hubby has taken our daughter to the Zoo this morning for a Daddy/Daughter date since we didn't get away... so off to sew her birthday outfit in peace.

Out of action this week

{image}
Instead of enjoying something like this....my little family has been out of action this week with a delightful gastro/vomiting bug!! Too much information??!?! Ahhh - as I work from home, take care of our daughter full-time at home I was desperate to get away and was really looking forward to the break. But it was not meant to be sadly :-( The positive slant is my husband works for the Govt and I have been assured he can re-claim his annual leave with a Dr certificate, which we promptly got this morning. How lucky are we to live in a country like this?! I have to say one thought that kept cropping up in my mind while we were sick was - children all over the world live with that sort of sickness constantly because they don't have access to clean water. That is far sadder than me missing out on my holiday.

A few snaps from the handmade markets

Here I am with my two lovely helpers at my stall on Sat, Christine on the left and Gret on the right. We had such a great, spring day - finally the sun shone on Canberra and it was GOOD. I had great neighbours (Hi Jen) and lots of lovely friends came to visit! I was pretty happy with my first ever stall experience and met lots of great customers. I wished I had of taken a photo of my lovely fascinator as it ended up being my last sale of the day!! A lady came as we were packing up and bought it - pretty much right off my head! I actually didn't want to sell it but hey - I can always make another.

MACRO Monday - Kalenchoe

I think this is a Kalenchoe in bud! From my Mum's garden. I am exhausted after such a busy weekend, but it was great! I will post some photos of the markets later and then I am off for the week on holidays! Yay! Lior was wonderful... doing the mad dash to Sydney in a 24hr round trip probably wasn't the smartest thing to do before the markets but we loved the concert and did a bit of Celebrity spotting from A to Z! We saw Andrew Upton, Cate Blanchett's hubby (he counted as A-grade because he is married to the queen of acting), saw David Campbell, Gordon spotted Millsy and then we saw one of the choreographers from SYTYCD - so you decide what order they go in on th celebrity scale - ha ha.

Friday favourites - Ban do

I can't get enough of Ban.do - I find their hair candy very inspirational and I love the size of their pieces - huge! Hope you have a great weekend - wish me 'success' at the markets - it's the dutch version of saying Good Luck and I don't really believe in Luck! I am off to the twilight market tonight - woot... should be fun, but home early enough to get a good night sleep for tomorrow. eeeek! I don't want to be dragging any stock home!!!! The lovely Gretel is coming to help me out - can't wait.

Off to Sydney to see Lior

Worth a blog post I think.... We are going to see Lior's Shadows and Light concert which is raising money for Youngcare. Doing the mad dash to Sydney, dropping off the wee one, crashing at my parents place, driving back to Canberra for final prep for the Handmade market! It's all happening. I am going to the twilight market Friday night to check it out - hoping that I will be too busy on Saturday at my own stall for personal shopping :-)

Also my hubby starts his annual leave today - YEAH for a little over a week.

Grace Designs new Photoshoot now on Facebook

I just love this photo too - it screams spring! The lovely model is wearing my new doily band on elastic. As well as my lovely friends, I do miss Queensland for the fantastic weather... There is no way we can wear short sleeves here just yet! Check out the full album here.

'My Place' now has a blog

The lovely store My Place at Bowral in the Southern Highlands, now has a lovely little blog. Add it to your google reader, I am sure they will feature some lovely things there - I downloaded my free apron pattern just this morning!

In Bloom - Vases and Vessels

You don't always have to put your flowers in traditional vases - single blooms look the cutest in little containers such as these egg cups or other little bottles you may have hidden around the house, think - baby food jars and tin cans (all cleaned up of course)! Grouping vessels of blooms at different heights looks fab or in a simple clustered line looks really effective too. It doesn't always have to be flowers either, simple greenery or a branch can look just as striking... now go out and spend 10 minutes scouting your garden for something lovely to brighten up your dining table :-) or not...

MACRO Monday - Vintage Jewellery

Some more divine 'TRUE' vintage bling from my dear Nanna - these were on loan for a party although I didn't end up wearing them, they still have the old screw backs on them - cute hey.

September 6, 2009

Grace Designs photo shoot

My fab friend Mezzy & her lovely friend AJ took some delightful photos for me of some of my headbands on their daughters. This is a sneak peak of Miss R in my African Violet felt band - how cute is she and that jacket looks great with her little headband!

Craft Stall Etiquette

Ok so it's one week to go till my market debut... and I found this great article on Made on the Left on craft stall etiquette :-) So, if you are thinking about it or are also having your first market stall, then this article may help out. I actually did a trial set up last night, thank goodness because I had to re-organise things several times - to try and translate what was in my head to what I could actually do with what I had! I like things simple but it's hard to do that when you have a real variety of products... and lots of stock.

I think I am going to be somewhere in that first photo - I have an outside stall on the grass. I have also ordered a gorgeous blue sunny spring day for next Saturday, just like today! Please God!

September 4, 2009

Friday favourites

I love these romantic bolero's from Bonzie. They are an independent Irish fashion label and a family run business (Aunt & Niece which I think is really special). Some more of their work on Flickr if you are keen to check them out. I got married in January in Australia - not the time to be wearing any sort of jacket/bolero! Have a lovely weekend.

Win a Gorgeous Ivory Headband ...

The Handmade Market blog is running a monthly competition and I am first cab off the ranks to do a giveaway. For a chance at winning this gorgeous piece, go to Grace Designs Etsy store then go to the handmade blog and tell them what your favourite piece is - in both the 'for sale' and 'sold' sections! For a second entry, blog about this competition, mentioning both Grace Designs and Handmade and link back to this handmade blog post.

DO NOT COMMENT on this blog post! Thanks folks :-)

Lovely ribbons and material

How lucky did I feel this month to have been given two lots of goodies from two lovely ladies who wanted to clear out some things they no longer had use for! I got some stunning fabric from Rockstars and Royalty the colours are good enough to eat and my friend's mum gave me the ribbons and lace etc. I have to sit on my hands for a bit because the creative in me wants to get lost in it all and MAKE but I have 'organising' type stuff to do for the markets - I feel like the prep has been going on forever and I am looking for the day just arriving now!

Ring pillow / Brooch cushion

I started making myself a little pin cushion then it got rather elaborate so I thought maybe it should be a mini ring pillow or brooch cushion. I of course don't need it but can't bear to give it away (my very grubby engagement ring pictured). I may have to get over my attachment and list it as I am curious to how they may sell. I hope to make a couple for the market... my production has slowed and I am spending the next two weeks getting everything organised for the stand. It was blowing a gale on Saturday and I really hope that we get a super nice day - I am outside! eeeeeeeeeek Need I add, I still don't have a pin cushion! ha ha
